Founder Spotlight: Nda Munlo — From $4,000 to Malawi's Digital Trade Network with SPCTRM

What can a founder build with $4,000?
For Ndankhonza (Nda) Munlo, Founder and CEO of SPCTRM, the answer is a growing digital platform designed to make it easier for Malawian businesses to sell online, deliver to customers and participate in the digital economy.
At a Glance
Nda started SPCTRM with $4,000 from a consulting client. His inspiration came partly from time living in Shanghai, where he saw first-hand the role e-commerce can play in transforming how businesses operate and how economies grow. After winning a university entrepreneurship competition, he decided to take that experience and build something practical for Malawi.
SPCTRM Ltd (spctrmafrica.com), founded in 2017 and headquartered in Lilongwe, is today Malawi's first integrated platform for on-demand food, grocery and taxi services — a first-mover in a market where digital commerce is still underbuilt. The company is fully bootstrapped.
He is joined by co-founders with complementary scale experience:
- Thulani Shabangu — 7+ years in information security, including at Accenture supporting major enterprise clients
- Thobith (Thobi) Abraham — 15+ years in product and technology leadership, taking B2B and B2C platforms from ideation through growth across challenging markets
Nda himself brings a decade in program management, economic policy and digital marketing, including roles with the African Union and British Council. The team's pitch is direct: Malawi has 12.7–14 million mobile money accounts, signalling a population comfortable with digital transactions, yet e-commerce penetration is minimal. SPCTRM estimates a $296 million untapped market.
For 265 Business Angels, Nda's story is the kind we want to put in front of investors: founders solving real problems, building with what they have, and looking for the right capital to take the next step.
A Platform Built Around a Simple Problem
For many Malawian businesses, getting online is only the beginning.
They also need to accept payments, manage orders, reach customers and deliver products. Building all that infrastructure independently is expensive and complicated.
SPCTRM simplifies it into one ecosystem:
Three Apps, One Network
- Customer App — Food and grocery ordering plus ride-hailing, with digital payments via Airtel Money, TNM Mpamba and card, real-time tracking and shareable trip progress
- Merchant App — Free online storefront creation, product catalog with variants/options from mobile or desktop, business dashboard for earnings and order processing, ability to update hours, hail third-party drivers, contact customers and run promo codes
- Driver App — Flexible earning for local drivers and youth, with onboarding and ongoing support; drivers are hailed on demand so merchants don't need to own vehicles or manage logistics
The design reflects Malawi's realities. Instead of requiring smartphones for every merchant or relying on drivers to manually shop aisles, SPCTRM's new grocery flow sends orders directly to store managers, who confirm availability and pricing before fulfilment. The process is supported via automated WhatsApp messaging and web tools, keeping product availability and pricing accurate — a common failure point in online grocery.
Merchant economics are deliberately low-friction: free sign-up, free storefront, free listing, free delivery-hailing; SPCTRM earns via a percentage sales commission. Transparent ratings build trust on both sides.
From Bootstrapped Beginnings to Market Traction
Despite zero marketing spend, SPCTRM is live on iOS and Android and has acquired 500+ customers and 10+ restaurant partners in its first six months, validating product-market fit.
Partnerships now include major brands:
- KFC, Pizza Inn (Simbisa Brands), Food Lover's Market and Sana Cash N' Carry
- Negotiations underway with Yum! Brands for deeper KFC integration
Next is a dedicated grocery platform addressing the accuracy challenge described above — direct-to-manager confirmation rather than shopper-guesswork. It is a practical approach to building digital commerce infrastructure around Malawian retail operations, not over them.
SPCTRM also builds the gig economy: driver recruitment and training (including for those not yet smartphone-savvy) and new roles like Driver Recruitment & Support Specialists to expand the network across Lilongwe, Blantyre and Mzuzu. The promise is not just convenience but income — high-earning, flexible jobs for young people.
Why This Matters Now in Malawi
Malawi's digital trade window is opening:
- Mobile money is ready; e-commerce is not. With 12.7M+ mobile money subscribers (SPCTRM) / 14M+ mobile money accounts (Nda), Malawi leapfrogged in payments. Yet e-commerce remains underdeveloped — precisely the gap SPCTRM, Yonne, WeAfrica and Zapaden are racing to fill, each with different rails (Yonne with Location IDs, WeAfrica with marketplace + ride, Zapaden as open ecosystem). Government recognises the lag: the National Digitalization Policy 2023–2028 is the blueprint to use ICT for growth, tackling infrastructure, affordability and literacy.
- Digital trade infrastructure is being built in parallel. In 2025, MITC launched Smart Connect (B2B marketplace, GIS explorer, One-Stop-Service Centre for licensing and investment facilitation) to link producers to domestic/export markets and fix supply shortfalls. MCCCI with TradeMark Africa (UK-funded) launched the Single Digital Platform (March 12, 2025) to automate Certificates of Origin, verify IDs, check tax compliance and digitize trade documentation — now processable from a smartphone. SPCTRM sits at the last-mile layer of this stack.
- Youth employment imperative. Malawi needs ~270,000 jobs annually but creates ~40,000. Zantchito/EU-UNDP, NxGen hubs and similar programmes show that tech platforms that formalize MSME retail and logistics can translate downloads into jobs — SPCTRM's merchant and driver network is a direct lever.
As Nda writes on SPCTRM's blog, "Mobile money is booming... a key ingredient for e-commerce success. However, despite this triumph, e-commerce in Malawi remains underdeveloped." Policy plus first-movers is how that unlocks.
The Ask: $350,000 for 14%
SPCTRM is now seeking $350,000 in equity financing for a 14% stake (implied ~$2.5M valuation) to fund its next phase:
1. Delivery Infrastructure
Building a small company-owned fleet to supplement the growing third-party driver network — improving reliability and unit economics in Lilongwe before regional expansion.
2. Retail Technology Integration
Connecting SPCTRM directly with retail partners' systems for real-time pricing and smoother data processing — moving beyond WhatsApp + web confirmation to API-level inventory sync.
3. Customer Acquisition
Investing in paid marketing to accelerate consumer adoption beyond existing organic and word-of-mouth growth (500+ customers to date with $0 spend) and to onboard thousands of Malawian businesses.
The ambition is clear: start in Malawi, build for scale, and expand across the region. VC4A already lists SPCTRM as an early-stage, first-mover platform for on-demand delivery and transport in Malawi.
For investors, this is early entry into African digital commerce via a capital-efficient, locally built team with enterprise-grade and product depth, live traction, and enterprise retail pipeline — seeking patient equity, not debt.
