Founder Spotlight: Mtendere Health Insurance — Peace of Mind, Built Digitally

What if healthcare could come with a little more mtendere — peace of mind?
Meet Robin Kuchombo, Taistois Mndala and Vicky Soko, the co-founders of Mtendere Health Insurance Limited, a tech-driven health insurance and healthcare ecosystem built around making medical coverage more accessible and healthcare operations more efficient.
At a Glance
Bringing together more than 14 years of collective experience across insurance, analytics, cybersecurity and healthcare operations, the founders saw first-hand the cost and operational barriers within traditional health coverage.
Their response? Build a more connected system.
Mtendere Health Insurance provides affordable micro-health insurance plans for low-to-middle-income households and SMEs, alongside SaaS platforms that help hospitals and medical insurers digitize operations and streamline claims.
The platform is already deployed across 3 partner hospitals, with active member acquisition underway. Its systems also integrate with payment platforms including PayChangu and OneKhusa, making transactions easier for patients, hospitals and insurers.
For 265 Business Angels, this is exactly the kind of venture worth putting in front of investors: a dual engine — insurance + software — solving access on the demand side and efficiency on the supply side.
Two Engines, One Ecosystem
Making cover affordable. Making hospitals work better. Mtendere operates through two connected layers:
Micro-Health Insurance — The Coverage Engine
Affordable plans designed for households and SMEs that have historically been locked out of medical aid — low-to-middle-income earners and small businesses that cannot absorb a health shock but cannot afford traditional premiums either.
The focus is deliberate: small tickets, mobile payments, simple onboarding — coverage that fits how Malawians earn and pay.
SaaS for Hospitals and Insurers — The Infrastructure Engine
Digital tools that help hospitals and medical insurers:
- Digitize patient, member and policy operations
- Streamline claims processing and reconciliation
- Reduce paperwork, leakage and turnaround times
- Integrate payments via PayChangu and OneKhusa
With deployment live in 3 partner hospitals, Mtendere is proving the software in real clinical operations — not slides — while building a distribution channel for its insurance products.
The design reflects Malawi's realities. Instead of requiring heavy IT upfront or relying on manual claims files, Mtendere meets hospitals where they are and connects patients, providers, insurers and mobile money in one flow.
Why This Matters Now in Malawi
Malawi's health-financing gap is stark and measurable:
- Coverage is minimal. Only about 1% had health insurance in the 2019–2020 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (205 of 31,259), and Afrobarometer 2025 puts medical-aid coverage at just 4%. Among those without cover, 45% cite lack of awareness and 36% cite inability to pay.
- The market is concentrated. MASM, operating since 1983, holds over 87% of private health insurance share with 500+ providers — a sign of both trust and unmet demand for new, flexible, tech-enabled products for the mass market.
- Out-of-pocket risk is high. With external funding accounting for around 55% of total health expenditure and public facilities reporting drug stock-outs, long waits and cost barriers (81% cite lack of medicines, 69% cite costs in Afrobarometer), households remain one illness away from financial distress.
- Microinsurance has precedent. MicroInsurance Services, operating since 2015, reached 92,000 active micro-policies by end-2022, mostly bundled with microcredit and largely rural — proof that small-ticket, channel-distributed cover can scale in Malawi.
- Digital payments are ready. Mobile money and aggregators like PayChangu and OneKhusa have normalized phone-based payment for urban and peri-urban Malawians. Insurance that plugs into those rails — as Mtendere does — removes the collection friction that killed earlier schemes.
Mtendere's bet is that the missing piece is not just cheaper premiums, but connected infrastructure: cover people simply, pay digitally, run hospitals efficiently, settle claims fast. That flywheel is what makes micro-cover sustainable.
The Ask: $45,000 for up to 25%
Mtendere Health Insurance is seeking $45,000 in equity investment for a maximum of 25% of the company to fund its next phase:
1. Expanding the Software Platform
Deepening hospital SaaS, insurer tooling and member experience — from onboarding to claims to payments.
2. Onboarding More Partner Hospitals
Moving beyond the first 3 live sites to a wider provider network, improving choice for members and volume for the platform.
3. Scaling Customer Acquisition
Growing membership among households and SMEs, plus employer and group channels.
4. Growing the Digital Healthcare Ecosystem
Building partnerships across the stack — healthcare providers, mobile network operators, fintechs and potential clients who want to be part of a digitized health journey.
Mtendere is also looking to connect with healthcare providers, mobile network operators and potential clients who want to be part of the growing ecosystem.
Accessible healthcare. Digital infrastructure. More peace of mind.
