Founder Spotlight: Emmanuel Mwaungulu — From Selling His Camera to Building Noble Minds
Originally featured as a 265 Business Angels Founder Spotlight on our social media channels, October 2026. Expanded for the blog.
How a young Malawian entrepreneur turned a passion for photography, a willingness to learn, and a search for opportunity into a growing creative and technology company.
He sold his camera to buy a laptop. Then he started taking photos with his phone.
For Emmanuel Mwaungulu, Founder and Managing Director of Noble Minds, building a business has meant learning to work with what is available, recognising opportunities, and finding ways to move forward even when the path is uncertain.
Today, at 25, he leads a Lilongwe-based company that brings together technology, creativity, marketing, and business development. But Noble Minds began long before it became the company it is today.

Starting Small, Learning Along the Way
After secondary school, Emmanuel started a small business selling movies and music through a burning centre. He later acquired a camera and ran a computer service shop alongside his photography work.
As he continued his studies, he faced a difficult decision. He needed a laptop for school, and selling his camera was the way to get one.
But giving up the camera did not mean giving up photography.
Emmanuel continued taking pictures using his phone, capturing nature and staged scenes, and even selling wallpapers. His resourcefulness kept his creative work alive despite having fewer tools at his disposal.
Eventually, his photography caught the attention of Kelvin Before Gumbi, popularly known as KBG, who encouraged him to get in touch if he ever found himself in Lilongwe.
That opportunity would become an important turning point.
Fifty CVs and One Opportunity
After completing his diploma in Computer Engineering, Emmanuel moved to Lilongwe in search of opportunities.
He went to Nyalimuzik Studios, approached the gate, and reminded KBG who he was. He then prepared 50 copies of his CV and began visiting companies in search of work.
One company asked whether he could manage social media.
He said yes.
That opportunity became Noble Minds' first client.
What began as an information technology company gradually expanded as Emmanuel combined the different skills he had developed across IT, photography, media, marketing, business development, and product sourcing.
While working to grow the business, he continued advancing his education, eventually earning a Bachelor of Science in Computing and Information Systems.
His journey reflects a combination of formal education, practical experience, and self-directed learning. Rather than waiting until every skill or resource was in place, he kept building with what he had.
Building Noble Minds Beyond IT
Today, Noble Minds has grown into a creative and technology company offering a range of business solutions.
Its services include:
- Marketing and branding
- Website and systems development
- IT support
- Media and production services
The company's approach brings together technology and creativity to help businesses address different needs through one partner.
Noble Minds has worked with organisations including UN Women, CARE, Airtel, Devdraft, MIPs, Exide Express, Bridgeview Hotels, Xcite Solar, and Digital Technologies.
As the company continues to grow, Emmanuel is looking beyond its current reach and pursuing opportunities to serve international clients.
A Different Measure of Skills
One of Emmanuel's guiding beliefs is that skills should not be measured by certificates alone.
His own journey illustrates why. From running small businesses after secondary school to developing creative and technical services for clients, much of his experience has come through practice, observation, experimentation, and learning on the job.
This does not diminish the value of formal education. Instead, his story shows how education and practical experience can work together to build capability.
For aspiring entrepreneurs, his journey offers a useful reminder: starting small does not mean thinking small, and limited resources do not have to determine the limits of what can be built.
The Next Chapter: Strategic Partnerships
Noble Minds is currently seeking strategic partnerships to support its continued growth and help expand its reach beyond Malawi.
For potential partners, the opportunity lies in working with a company that brings together IT, media, branding, and business development under one roof, with experience serving organisations across different sectors.
As the business enters its next stage, building the right relationships will be an important part of turning its experience and capabilities into wider opportunities.

From selling his camera to finance his studies, to moving to Lilongwe in search of work, to turning his first social media client into the beginning of Noble Minds, his journey has been shaped by taking action before every piece of the puzzle was in place.
